If you’re concerned about the toxic substances in commercial cleaning products and what they could do be doing to the long-term health of your family, not to mention the environment, rest assured! There are plenty of Natural Cleaning Products that will keep your home fresh and hygienic without harmful chemicals, all you need are a few basic ingredients.
Bathtub & Shower Cleaner
This DIY scouring powder is brilliant for cutting through inground scum on bathtubs and showers. Mix 1 cup baking soda, ½ cup salt and ½ cup borax powder. Wet the surface of the tub or shower with water (or white vinegar if especially dirty). Sprinkle on powder and let it sit for 5 minutes. Scrub with a brush and rinse with water (or white vinegar if really dirty).
Toilet Cleaner
No one likes cleaning toilets and with this simple method you don’t even need to scrub. Sprinkle a cup of baking soda around the toilet bowl and leave it for an hour. Pour a cup of white vinegar on top and leave for 5 minutes, and then flush.
Oven & Microwave Cleaner
Mix baking soda with water and apply to the surface of the oven, leave for a few hours and wipe off the paste and grime with a sturdy cloth. Microwaves can be cleaned with a mixture of 2 tablespoons of baking soda and/or lemon juice and 1 cup water. Place in a bowl and heat in microwave until steam condenses on the sides. Wipe down with a cloth.
Dishwasher Cleaner
This is a simple way to remove odours from your dishwasher. Simply remove all dishes and add two cups of white vinegar to a dishwasher safe bowl. Put on the top rack and run the hot cycle.
Mirror Cleaner
For sparkling mirrors, this is an oldie but a goodie to clean off smears. Mix half parts each of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and spray onto the mirror. Wipe off with old newspaper or clean rags.
Carpet cleaner
For immediate spills use a mixture of baking soda and soda water. Sprinkle the baking soda on the spill and add soda water and mop up with a sponge or towel. For old stains use one part borax and two parts of cornflour and sprinkle on carpet, wait for an hour then vacuum to deodorise, remove light stains and inground dirt.
All Purpose Cleaner
This all-purpose cleaner is better than any commercial ones, it cleans kitchen grease and bathrooms amazingly. You’ll need 1 teaspoon of borax, ½ teaspoon of washing soda, 1 teaspoon of liquid castile soap and any preferred essential oils. Put borax, washing soda and liquid soap into a spray bottle, add 2 cups of warm water (distilled or boiled is best). Shake thoroughly and use as needed.
